Centre for Labour Market Studies

 

The research activities of the Centre for Labour Market Studies focus on addressing the emerging challenges confronting the contemporary world of work in the context of a globalising economy. The research studies are undertaken with the perspective of enhancing the theoretical understanding as well as to provide inputs for necessary policy formulation.The Centre has been established for undertaking specilised research on different aspects of labour market. The research activities of  the Centre focuses on themes like: Employment, with special emphasis on employment generation strategies ;Labour Mobility and Wages.

The core areas identified for research include:

  • Employment and unemployment by regions, sectors etc.

  • Labour mobility and labour turnover, especially in informal sector

  • Developing data base & labour Information System on informal  economy

Specific research issues included in the Centre's  current  research agenda are:

  • Explicating the employment trends in terms of sectors, regions and industries.

  • Analyzing the forms and structures of unemployment/ under-employment with a view to suggest appropriate social protection measures to countervail the uncertainties and insecurities due to unemployment/ under-employment.

  • Estimating the labour absorption capacities of the various sectors and industries.

  • Analysing the employment generation capacities of the informal sector activities with a view to recommend the strategies to harness their potential.

  • Evaluating the on-going efforts for employment generation, particularly in the informal sector.

  • Undertaking labour market assessment in relation to training, retraining and skill development.

  • Examining the trends in wages by sectors, regions and identifying the critical factors in the process of wage determination mechanisms.

  • Analysing the process of informalisation and casualisation of labour.

  • Studying the effect of technological upgradation on labour and employment.

  • Examining the implications of a globalising economy on the patterns of labour mobility.

  • Addressing the labour market implications of linking trade with labour standards.
