  Dr. Ruma Ghosh

Ph.D. (Sociology)

 

Dr. Ruma Ghosh has completed Masters, M.Phil and Ph.D in Sociology from Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi and has been working on labour issues for more than 12 years. She is the Coordinator of the Research Center on Labour and Health and Associate Editor of the Institute’s academic journal ‘Labour and Development’.

 

Her research interest lies in issues such as Industrial Sociology, Informal Sector Labour, Labour Market Transformations and Health Insecurity of Workers in Informal Employment. She has undertaken several research projects on important labour issues, some of which have been conducted in collaboration with international organizations such as ILO and UNICEF. Some of the recent studies include: Insecurities of Informal Sector Workers with Special Focus on Health Insecurities of Street Vendors; Health Insecurities of Workers in Informal Employment: A Study of Existing and Possible Interventions; Study of Migration, Labour Process and Employment in the Informal Sector of Brick Making; Labour Process and Employment Relations in Zardosi & Hathari Units of Varanasi; Evaluation of the National Child Labour Projects in 50 districts for Ministry of Labour; Minimum Wage and Mode of Payment of the Agricultural Workers in Punjab; Study of Home-Based Industry and Child Labour: A Case of Gem Polishing Industry of Jaipur; Study of Home-Based Industry and Child Labour: A case of Glass Bangle Industry of Firozabad; Study on Child labour in the Sports Goods Industry of Jalandhar. She has also coordinated several major research projects including the ILO sponsored multi-centric study on Home Based Workers in Nine Hazardous Industries of India and the ILO project on prevention of HIV/AIDS in the world of work: A Tripartite Reponse.  

She coordinates training programmes on Qualitative Research Methods for young teachers and researchers from Universities/Colleges/Research Institutions; International Training Programme on Prevention of HIV/AIDS in the World of Work; training programme on Health Issues of informal sector workers  and conducts Seminars/Workshops on issues such as Informal Sector Labour and Health Insecurities  of Informal Sector Labour.

Dr. Ruma Ghosh has presented several papers in National/International Seminars organized by JNU, ILO, UNICEF, FES and IPSA on themes like informal sector labour, seasonal migration of labour, child labour and health insecurities of workers in informal employment. She has a number of research publications in the form of articles, research monographs and edited book.
